 NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard is responding to a barge allision at mile marker 435.8 on the Mississippi River near Vicksburg, Mississippi, Thursday.  The towing vessel Thomas Kay allided with the Vicksburg Railroad Bridge this afternoon. One ethanol barge has sustained damage from the Allison.  The other eighteen dry cargo barges reported no damage.... [Read More]

MOBILE, Ala. – The Coast Guard and partner agencies have responded to an increase in incidents involving oyster fishermen in Bay St. Louis, Miss., over the past two days. One serious marine incident took place, which involved injury to a crewmember.  The other incidents involved capsized fishing vessels. The incidents, due to unsafe work practices and overloading of oyster fishing vessels, coincide with the State of Mississippi initiating the Oyster Recovery Program, Jan. 18th, to relocate oyster beds from St. Joe Reef to Pass Christian and Biloxi Bay.... NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard continues its response to a 22-barge breakaway at mile marker 54 on the Mississippi River, near West Point a la Hache, Wednesday. As a result of the breakaway, three deep-draft motor vessels transiting the river sustained damage after colliding with a few of the barges. A portion of dry-bulk soy beans from one of the vessels entered the river and the release has since been secured. The three affected deep-draft vessels are safely anchored. SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. — The U.S. Coast Guard is scheduled to commence ice breaking operations, beginning Thursday, in the waters of Green Bay in Lake Michigan. These operations will likely occur in areas commonly used by recreational users, such as but not limited to, the Fox River, southern Green Bay and the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal. WARRENTON, Ore. — The Coast Guard suspended the search at 2 p.m. for two fishermen who went missing after the fishing vessel Eagle III broke up along North Jetty near Coos Bay, Wednesday. All 22 barges were loaded with coal and petroleum coke, a coal like substance. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Coast Guard medevaced a 56-year-old man 46 miles west of Charlotte Harbor, Florida, Tuesday evening. At 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg received a call via VHF-FM marine radio channel 16 reporting the captain aboard the fishing vessel, Nancy Lou, was experiencing severe chest pains. Also, two crewmembers aboard the 50-foot commercial fishing boat requested emergency medical attention. Ice condition three is set when weather conditions are favorable for the formation of ice in navigable waters.
