No other descriptive information is available. Click on the photo above to video the video PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Members from Coast Guard Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, adopted a new mascot Thursday after their former mascot passed away in May. The new mascot, a German shepherd named Chief Bert, served as an explosives detection dog with a Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team in Galveston, Texas, before he retired in May 2015. The owner was no longer able to care for him, and the station offered to adopt Chief Bert as the station’s new mascot.... [Read More]

HONOLULU — The Coast Guard is continuing the search for 59-year-old Alec "Ace” Cooke near Waimea Bay, Friday. On-scene assets have conducted 19 sorties, covered 5,900 square miles and deployed two self-locating datum marker buoys. An HC-130 Hercules airplane crew and two MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crews from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point are searching as well as the USCGC Kittiwake crew and a Coast Guard Auxiliary airplane crew.... BALTIMORE — A Unified Command has been formed as a response to an oil spill Friday at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The Coast Guard along with Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority personnel, including Airport Operations, and Fire and Rescue; D.C. Department of Energy and Environment, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and D.C. Harbor Patrol are responding to spill of an estimated of 7,500 to 9,000 gallons of Jet A aviation fuel within the facility and into the Potomac River south of Reagan National Airport.... [Read More]

CLEVELAND – A Cleveland-based Coast Guardsman was sentenced to 15 years in prison, a life term of supervised release and requirement to register as a sex offender Friday for accessing, possessing and distributing child pornography in violation of Title 18 U.S. Code Section 2252A. Lt. Sean Barnhill, of North Ridgeville, Ohio, was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for conduct that occurred off duty on his personal computer, and pled guilty to one count of knowing receipt and distribution of child pornography July 13, 2015.... HOUSTON — Coast Guard crews rescued two kayakers and a third made it to shore after they encountered large waves near the mouth of the Brazos River Friday morning. A person on the shoreline made an urgent distress call to Coast Guard Station Freeport at 7:42 a.m., reporting that three people were in the water and clutching to overturned kayaks in heavy seas, half a mile off the mouth of the river. A Coast Guard rescue boat crew launched immediately and arrived 16 minutes after the call to find the men in distress and encountering 5 to 6-foot waves.... SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The Coast Guard Cutter Richard Dixon returned four Dominicans, one Haitian and 13 Indian migrants to the Dominican Republic Friday, after they were interdicted in the Mona Passage Wednesday while travelling  illegally to Puerto Rico. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico will file a criminal complaint to prosecute one other Dominican man traveling with the group, with a prior criminal history in the United States, on charges of attempted illegal re-entry into the United States by a prior agravated felon....
