A seasonal alert status is the posture set from Dec. 1 to Mar. 31 to prepare for the potential presence of ice. PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Portsmouth-based Coast Guard Cutter Bear is scheduled to return to its homeport Thursday following a month-long patrol in the Western Caribbean that resulted in a joint seizure of more than 21 kilograms of cocaine. During their patrol, Bear’s crew coordinated with multiple countries in the central Caribbean, including the  Bahamas and Cuba, to stem the flow of drugs into the country, assist with the safety of life at sea, and to slow the flow of illegal migration in the Caribbean. ... NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard is responding to a vessel allision at mile marker 104.3 on the Mississippi River near New Orleans, Tuesday. The tanker Nordbay reportedly struck the Jefferson Parish water intake at mile marker 104 on the Mississippi River. The vessel was directed to the New Orleans General Anchorage and while it was in-route, it reportedly allided with the Governor Nicholls Street Wharf. The vessel sustained a hole in the hull, which reportedly discharged ballast water. There are no reports of pollution.... [Read More]

NEW ORLEANS - The Coast Guard is responding to a report of a 35 barge breakaway near Caruthersville, Mo., Tuesday.Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi were notified that the towing vessel Joe Bobzien reported grounding and having 35 loaded dry cargo barges break away from the vessel at 4:30 a.m., Tuesday.The river is restricted to all traffic, except assist vessels, from mile marker 864 to 834.ACL Transportation Services is deploying two vessels to assist.The cause of the incident is under investigation. ...
