NEW ORLEANS - The Coast Guard rescued an additional 14 people and assisted other agencies in rescuing another one in distress due to flooding in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, area Wednesday.  Coast Guard crews, under the coordination of Coast Guard Sector New Orleans, are operating in support of the state of Louisiana, the Governor's office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and the Louisiana National Guard. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Coast Guard is responding Wednesday morning to a fire aboard the 561-foot passenger/cargo vessel Caribbean Fantasy, approximately 2 nautical miles north of San Juan Harbor in Puerto Rico. At approximately 7:42 a.m., Coast Guard Sector San Juan received a report of a fire aboard a Panamanian-flagged passenger/cargo ship carrying 512 passengers, including crew en route to Dominican Republic. BOSTON — The Coast Guard rescued four fishermen Wednesday morning after the fishing vessel Lydia & Maya started taking on water about 40 miles south of Southwest Harbor, Maine. At about midnight, Coast Guard Sector Northern New England watchstanders received a broken transmission from a crew member aboard the 71-foot vessel saying they were taking on water. Shortly after, an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon alert was sounded, notifying watchstanders the crew was in the water.... [Read More]

NEW ORLEANS - The Coast Guard is responding to an oil discharge near Pilottown, Louisiana, Tuesday.  Watchstanders with Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report at 10:00 a.m. that approximately 840 gallons of crude oil entered the Lower Mississippi River near South Pass from a corroded flow line.  OMI Environmental Solutions has deployed approximately 1,200 feet of sorbent boom around the source and 400 feet of hard boom to collect any discharge that passed the sorbent boom. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Coast Guard is searching for a 47-year-old man Monday near Horseshoe Beach after the man failed to return from a fishing trip.Missing is Mitchell Szegi, 47, of Ocala. Szegi left in a 22-foot fishing boat at noon Sunday from Horseshoe Beach and was scheduled to return no later than Sunday night.
