SEATTLE — The Coast Guard will begin use of NIXLE to provide publicly accessible reports on the Umpqua River Bar conditions Friday. Station Umpqua River has begun broadcasting bar reports, bar conditions and restrictions using the technology provided by the website Nixle http://www.nixle.com/ as part of a pilot program that will run from Nov. 28, 2014, to Jan. 28, 2015. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Coast Guard suspended its search Wednesday for a 37-year-old man reported overdue from a fishing trip aboard a 12-foot boat, which reportedly began Saturday morning near Shell Island, Florida. Joseph Johns, 44, the owner of the vessel, was located deceased by a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission crew in Waccasassa Bay, north of Yankeetown, Florida Sunday. LOS ANGELES - As cooler temperatures set in across the state, the Coast Guard is focusing on reminding boaters and the public about the dangers of cold water drowning. Cold water is defined as any water temperature under 70 degrees, which causes a lot of misconceptions because it doesn’t sound very cold.  When you are immersed suddenly it can take your breath away. These cool and cold-water temperatures are enough to drop your body's core temperature significantly. Current water temperatures across the Los Angeles-area are around 66 degrees.... [Read More]

BOSTON — Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is hosting a media event Tuesday at 7 a.m. for the embarking of 193 endangered sea turtles found stranded off New England's coast.Animal caregivers from Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary rescued the cold-stunned turtles from along the Cape Cod and Buzzards Bay shoreline where, following ocean currents southward, they became trapped in the cold water along the cape.The turtles are presently at the New England Aquarium's Aquarist Animal Care Center in Quincy, Massachusetts.... SAN FRANCISCO – The Coast Guard rescued a kayaker stranded on the Gallinas Creek in San Rafael, Saturday evening. At approximately 7:40 p.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders received a report from the San Rafael Fire Department that a kayaker became stranded in the mud while attempting to navigate the Gallinas Creek near Bucks Landing.  After failed attempts to reach the kayaker with rescue boats due to the shallow water, the Coast Guard launched a rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco....
