OREGON INLET, N.C. — The Coast Guard towed a boat Thursday with two people aboard within Colington Harbour. Watchstanders at Sector North Carolina received a report at 2:35 p.m. that a 16-foot skiff was disabled with a man and woman aboard. A 24-foot Special Purpose Craft-Shallow Water crew from Coast Guard Station Oregon Inlet launched at 3:05 p.m. and arrived on scene at 4:04 p.m. The boat crew took the skiff in tow and returned it to Colington Harbour at 5:11 p.m. ... Coast Guardsmen from the Cutter Bertholf from Alameda, Calif., seize more than 12,800 pounds of cocaine and apprehend four suspected drug smugglers from a self-propelled semisubmersible about 300 miles southwest of Panama March 3. This is the second SPSS interdiction by the Coast Guard in Fiscal Year 2016, which runs from Oct. 1, 2015, to Sept. 30, 2016, and the fifth SPSS interdiction by the Coast Guard since June 2015. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.— The Coast Guard suspended the search for a missing boater in Tampa Bay, Florida, Thursday afternoon. At 11:52 a.m. Tuesday, watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg received a mayday call via VHF-FM marine band radio channel 16 from a woman aboard a 24-foot boat reporting her friend had not resurfaced after diving to release a fouled anchor. WASHINGTON – The U.S. Coast Guard has expanded Automatic Identification System (AIS) requirements to include additional commercial vessels.  The change, which applies to U.S.- and foreign-flagged vessels that are 300 gross tons or less, went into effect this month. Most commercial vessels operating on U.S. waterways are required to have AIS, a navigation safety communications system designed to mitigate collisions.... [Read More]

MIAMI — The search for a missing 64-year-old kayaker in the vicinity of Eleuthera, Bahamas, was suspended Wednesday. Watchstanders at Coast Guard 7th District command center received a report from the Royal Bahamas Defence Force of a male kayaker who was reported missing by his son-in-law after not returning from a kayaking trip Tuesday evening. The Coast Guard launched several assets to assist with the search of a swimmer after he was reported missing Tuesday, April 19, 2016. MIAMI — Coast Guard search-and-rescue crews are searching for a missing kayaker in the vicinity of Eleuthera, Bahamas, Wednesday. Watchstanders at Coast Guard 7th District command center received a report from the Royal Bahamas Defence Force of a 64-year-old male missing kayaker who was reported missing by his son-in-law after not returning Tuesday evening. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The Coast Guard repatriated 21 Dominicans and returned seven Haitian migrants to the Dominican Republic following two at-sea interdictions by Caribbean Border Interagency Group law enforcement authorities in the Mona Passage Sunday night. TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. — The Coast Guard suspended its search for a missing kayaker in the vicinity of Tybee Island, at approximately 9 p.m., Tuesday. Coast Guard crews, along with local agencies, searched for a missing 38-year-old man in the vicinity of Tybee Island since Monday. The individual has not been located. MIAMI — The Coast Guard repatriated 137 Cuban migrants to Bahia de Cabañas, Cuba, Tuesday. The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Raymond Evans repatriated 62 Cuban migrants and the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter William Trump repatriated 75 Cuban migrants. These repatriations are a result of 10 separate migrant interdictions at sea within the last week in the south Florida Straits. In each instance, the Coast Guard helped secure the U.S. border and prevented these perilous sea voyages from ending in tragedy....
